Fourth PBC table Tennis camp a success

Malta Independent Thursday, 12 January 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

PBC table tennis coaching centre organised a one day training camp for the fourth consecutive year at St Aloysius pavilion.

Physiotherapist Guo Ming opened the programme with a short lecture on ‘prevention of injury’. Ming, also a keen table tennis player, highlighted the main causes of injuries through table tennis and how to prevent them, both from his personal experience and from a physiotherapy point of view.

Head coach Peter Borg Cardona, assisted by Serbian coach Zlejko Demitrijevic, conducted the two-hour morning training followed by lunch. The afternoon kicked off with yet another one hour of coaching, basic drills for footwork and technique as well as multi ball training.

As in previous editions, the climax of the day was the competition. In the Singles event, Julian Sultana confirmed once again to be superior and the strongest. The final was fast paced and dominated by Julian. He beat his opponent Gabriel Debattista in three straight sets to secure top place and take home gold.

The competition featured two promising prospects, both aged 11, Carl Bondin and Matthew Galea. Both Matthew and Carl produced several impressive displays in the quarter final against Simon Sultana and Theo Camilleri respectively.

In the Plate event Simon Sultana and Mark Ebejer fought out a 3-2 thriller in the semi final with Simon taking the final game 11-8. Simon then overpowered Theo Camilleri

3-0 in the final.

All participants showed improvement in their training and in the matches held at the end of the camp. This brings the end of another successful year at PBC table tennis coaching centre. Saturday coaching sessions for adults and youths will resume in mid January. All sessions are conducted by professional and certified coaches.
